It’s not often I come across a drink I’ve never heard of but Pacharan or Paxtaran, a Basque sloe-flavoured liqueur from Navarra, is one of them.

Not the most brilliant photo but 3 stunning small plates in the bar at @lidobristol last night: slow-cooked cauliflower with Aleppo chilli and walnut butter, beetroot borani and winter squash caponata with pinenuts. Great place for a light supper.

Satisfyingly hearty, sweet-flavoured leek and potato soup with exemplary soda bread at @hugh__corcoran’s highly controversial The Yellow Bittern yesterday. Why controversial? Because Corcoran says -despite only opening at lunchtime and only taking cash - diners don’t spend enough. My take in full in this week’s Friday 5 but it’s refreshingly different and I liked it.

Lovely to have my book The Wine Lover’s Kitchen reissued by @rylandpetersandsmall. It’s a collection of recipes for cooking with wine including this seductively spicy Moorish duck casserole with cinnamon and olives which you can find on my matchingfoodandwine website along with a quirky but excellent recipe for red wine spaghetti (cooked in red wine, believe it or not) The perfect present, dare I say, for any wine lover who enjoys cooking.

Back in the UK and missing my Mexican breakfast - in this instance chilaquiles from @ivoiremx a popular café just round the corner from the apartment we were staying in leafy Polanco in Mexico City. Mexican breakfasts were a revelation - see I need to up my game now I’m home.
