Zünftler Black Forest Cherry Schnapps

If you’re planning to celebrate the start of Oktoberfest this weekend (yes, in September - I *know*) snap up this full-size bottle of Zünftler cherry schnapps from Lidl for just £14.99

It’s drier than kirsch (think grappa rather than a liqueur) and packs quite a punch but would be good as an after dinner shot after a hearty wurst-laden meal*. You can drink it as a frozen shot but having tried it that way I’d serve it at room temperature and let anyone who wants to add an ice cube or two. Handsome bottle as well if you want to take it along as a present.

Celebrate your own Oktoberfest!

Lidl is also stocking two really cheap German beers over the next couple of weeks - a Festbier and Wheat Beer - both at 99p and a shandy-style drink, Naturtrübes Radler, for 59p. I haven't tried any of these so can't vouch for them but I'd take a chance on the beers.

Alternatively try this delicious recipe for Oktoberfest chicken

Some wonderful comments, and yes, if you are expecting sweet syrup... it will be rude BUT nothing better for that Swiss fondue, try dipping the bread into the Kirsch and then the molten cheese... a breath of wow as you eat it! Drinking it in little glasses but not shot allows one the pleasure of every sip... if you need, use a bigger glass instead of refilling.
Clearly I am a heathen, hillbilly, yodeling as I imbibe but I enjoy every little sip. I would need to be able to compare a few different ages to see whether it improves or loses flavour.... but whatever your thoughts... try some Icelandic Brenevin or Lante, then you might recategorise Kirschwasser as a true eau de vie. Sante

Who ever know what Slivovica or Palinca is , I can see more of the comments saying is awful , go to Eastern europe in Balkan countries and drink the homemade one made by plums or cherry made in the natural way , I wish too see your reaction then 😄😄 you cannot compare the homemade with the bottled one . Anyway is not that bad for the price . I drinked worse like Bells whisky. Grants etc which are shait

This foul devils brew is about as palatable as diesel oil.. But being a chronic alcoholic with nothing else left in the house I found that mixing this with 4x super strength squash and a splash of tizer it can be swallowed if you hold your nose

They call me Grant schnapps.

Tastes of turpentine blended with acetone and if you drink too much will send you blind.

Amazing. Drinking it now. Wonderful example of Schnapps/Grappa. Vodka...does not taste like grain...right?

Some of the posts on here made me smile.
If you're looking for a sweet 🍒 liqueur then this isn't it. For some reason the word 'peasants' comes to mind. 😉 Prost!

No hint of cherry in smell or taste. It reminded me more of Tequila. I will not be buying it again.

I bought this a few years ago, and was disappointed when I tasted it. However, I recently bought a lidl morello cherry sparkling fruit and tried mixing with this schnapps and it is quite nice. I think mixing with cherry liqueur is another way to make it palatable.

Also, many drinks labelled as Schnapps are fruit flavoured liqueurs, not spirits.
True Schnapps is a strong spirit, typically 40% alcohol or more.

Leo Maxwell on March 31 2022 at 19:46

This is a great spirit!
The problem is people are confusing Cherry spirit with Cherry Liqueur.
De Kuyper cherry brandy liqueur, for example, is 25% alcohol, this stuff is 40% alcohol, more like Whisky or Vodka.
Spirits and Liqueurs are very different, and not meant to be the same.
Liqueurs are sweet, and often fruit flavoured
It is like comparing Drambuie to Whisky.

It’s not Schnapps as anyone who drinks Schnapps would know it. I’ve been to Germany and drank lots of different Schnapps and this is NOT Schnapps. I wouldn’t even mind if it had a hint of bloody cherry.
Don’t buy it unless you like Raki or Sambuca.

I actually think I would have preferred drinking petrol. Absolutely diabolical taste. Not even a hint of cherry whatsoever!! Vile drink

Deb on February 26 2022 at 19:03

This stuff is unbelievably bad.
Smells like methylated spirits and tastes well nothing like cherries. Bogging

Sharon McCarthy on January 30 2021 at 21:13

I was so looking forward to this as I love cherries. I should have known from the smell how vulgar it was 🤮
I am so disappointed. Think it will be going down the drain & I'll use the bottle as a decorative piece 😂😂 Will look nice with lights in

Catherine on December 17 2020 at 21:27

I was looking forward to this. I had imagined it would be like Black Forest Gateau in liquid alcoholic form...I was wrong...very very wrong! I tried it on its own, chilled it, had it over ice and mixed it with either Coke zero or Lemonade...it just made it taste funky.
It suggests using it in desserts. I'll give that a go and if no improvement it'll either grace the back of the alcohol cupboard or I'll see if it's a good substitute for drain cleaner!!

Horrid took it back.

Emil on September 26 2020 at 11:10

Excellent taste and very dry. Will be appreciated by people who know schnapps/ rakia, etc.

John on March 27 2020 at 19:07

Tastes like literal ass
